Google - the Marketing Giant

Image representing Google as depicted in Crunc...

Google have dropped/inspired another in a line of new innovative Hardware products, and with the Chrome OS and the series of Net-books being worked on, you might find yourself thinking that Google is trying to make a play for the hardware device market.

With the drop of Nexus One, Google appears to have pulled out all marketing stops.  Using services like YouTube to create Apple-like buzz around their new product.  Not to mention the Twitter buzz and Yahoo Buzz.  And the rumours dropped a few weeks ago by Techcrunch to start the hype was very Apple-ish.  It looks as though Google are quite serious about a move into the hardware device market.

Vevo.com: No indi, metal, or trance for you

Vevo

Image via Wikipedia

Google and gang have just released a new video website just for music videos, called Vevo.com. After having a bit of trouble getting on the site (it may have been busy, I am in Oz) it looks like we may have a new site to go to when we are chasing the new Mariah Carey clip, Pina Collabo clip, or Rihanna clip.

But funnily enough, not many of the groups/artists I like are on the site.  And the when I clicked on the new Weezer clip I got the "Sorry, this video is not available in your region." Strange, it worked fine on YouTube.com, so I'm a little unsure of Vevo.com's purpose in the interwebs.

Broken Internet

OK, I'm a family man with two beautiful girls aged 5 and 2.5, so when I talk about the proposed "Clean Feed" filtering system our government is looking to put on our Internet over here in Australia, I have a vested interest.

Even though I do a lot surfing, I seem to have missed the whole story re: the Great Aussie Firewall.  Or maybe I just dismissed it as another of those crackpot schemes thought up by bored Governments, that will never see the light of day.  Either way, the concept of a non-communist country deciding to lock down the Internet sounds ridiculous, not just from a freedom of speech angle, but also from a technical angle.

Convenience over Quality - the death of HD

Netflix streaming on my Xbox 360

There is a race in the tech/gadget world at the moment to find the best way to deliver online movie and TV content.  This race is revolving around websites (Hulu, Netflix), Game consoles (PS3, and Xbox 360) and dedicated streaming set-top boxes (Tivo, Roku and Apple TV).  And in reality, these systems and devices are competing with the more traditional content delivery products (CD, DVD and Blu-ray).

Blu-ray, the winner in the HD media wars, doesn't seem to be doing as well as was hoped, so is our support of the online delivery systems going to kill off physical media?  And is our support of online delivery, at this early stage in its development, going leave us with the best product in the coming years?  Or is our support of convenience over quality going to leave us watching movies and TV at YouTube quality, because we have forgotten what quality was?

More Pointui 2 soon?

I feel a little silly pimping Home 2 when it is taking sooooo long to come out, but the masters of the tease have got me all excited again by popping up a preview of Home 2 on YouTube.  And I have to say, it looks good, and it would look even better if it was on my phone.....

There has been a bit of buzz in the Smartphone industry of late, with the arrival of Google with Android, the ascension of the iPhone to greatness, and the upcoming announcement from Palm.

Well, actually I'm not really sure if there is any buzz around Palm, but the boys on the GDGT Podcast spent a bit of time on the possibilities, and really, it'll have to be something pretty amazing.  Otherwise, it may be the last roll of the dice for founders of the PDA.

...have you turned it off, and on again?
