Is the Smartphone Race Over?

Broken Points:

  • The iPhone created the Smartphone market for the masses

  • The iPhone is a feature phone, not a Smartphone

  • Apple has done what it wanted to do with the iPhone and iPad, which was gather new users to the Apple brand

  • The Smartphone fight is now between Android and Windows Mobile 7

The iPhone model: the new smart phone.

With the impending release of the iPhone OS 3.0, I found myself in a discussion with friends on the importance of Apple's presence in the mobile/smart phone space.  Whether or not you like the iPhone, or hate Apple with the passion reserved only for an opposing football team, you have to admit that their approach into this space is breaking the mould and building a brand new one for all other manufacturers and carriers to imitate.

Why?  The model for the mobile phone industry here in Australia is like that of most consumer electronics.  Bring out a closed platform/device, sell as many as you can, come out with a killer new feature and build a new phone around it, sell as many as you can, rinse and repeat.

    More Pointui 2 soon?

I feel a little silly pimping Home 2 when it is taking sooooo long to come out, but the masters of the tease have got me all excited again by popping up a preview of Home 2 on YouTube.  And I have to say, it looks good, and it would look even better if it was on my phone.....

There has been a bit of buzz in the Smartphone industry of late, with the arrival of Google with Android, the ascension of the iPhone to greatness, and the upcoming announcement from Palm.

Well, actually I'm not really sure if there is any buzz around Palm, but the boys on the GDGT Podcast spent a bit of time on the possibilities, and really, it'll have to be something pretty amazing.  Otherwise, it may be the last roll of the dice for founders of the PDA.

...have you turned it off, and on again?

    Pointui 2

    [caption id="" align="alignright" width="252" caption="All secret and stuff."]All secret and stuff.[/caption]

Some time ago I wrote on the features of a GUI project for the Windows Mobile platform called Home, made by the guys at Pointui.com.  At the time they had dropped the 1.5 version and I was having a lot of fun with it.

In internet time that was like, years ago, and apart from a 1.5a release there hasn't been much movement on Home or the website.  I was beginning to think the project was dead, and without much else out there, I started looking longingly at the iPhone.

But then I received an email from the Poitui team (I donated) apologising for the wait and talking about Home 2.0.  Apparently they have been building a theme for another company for the last couple of months, and were getting paid.  I totally understand, guys.

With a new site design and the promise of a new version of Home, I urge all Windows Mobile users to keep an eye on Pointui.

..if it's broken, why fix it?
