Apple vs Google vs Commonsense

You may have heard about the Google Voice app that may or may not have been rejected by the Apple App store.  It seemed to be all the Internet was caring about there for a while, and Techcrunch have brought it up again.
Am I the only one that doesn't care what Apps Apple allow in their own Apps store, for their own platform, to run on their own hardware? The reason the device is as good as it is has a lot to do with the way Apple manages and implements the rest of the ecosystem, so for craps sake people, get over it, or buy another phone/device.
There are plenty of other more open phones and devices out there in the market.  I hear Android is a good Smartphone platform, and one day the hardware will catch up.  Devices like the Archos 5 and 7 are really starting to offer some decent alternatives.  Why these don't seem to be able to gain traction is the subject of a whole new post.
Maybe this story is a testament to the importance of the iPhone, and due to Apple's success as the newcomer to the smartphone market.  It could also be that all those writing about tech are iPhone users and that really this isn't as big a deal as it is being made out.  I mean, Google do have their own smartphone platform, and the "war of words" is just sentences.
A bit of disclosure, I live in Australia, so I don't have access to the Google voice product, and probably won't in the near future.  So maybe my apathy stems from listening to those in the US complaining about some feature on a product that we are unlikely to get (Although I have had MMS on my iPhone, for some time now).
As important as the iPhone is, it can't and shouldn't have everything we want.  If it did, then there would be no point in having other phones.  There needs to be competition to keep things moving forward, so maybe this is one of those areas where there can be competition.
On the other hand, I think I said that about "cut and paste".  So remember that Apple has created the iPhone as a platform, and that means that when it suits Apple, and the market is ripe, it can be added.  Sometimes we need to remember the things our parents said when we were 2 years old and were doing the "I want it now" dance.
